By all measures, the 2nd annual Make A Difference -Wisconsin Investment Conference fundraiser was a resounding success – both for attendees and for our mission!
Almost 300 investment and other business professionals attended the May 11, 2010 event at the Intercontinental Hotel to hear leading investment managers deliver a solid afternoon of insight.
Three area investment professionals led the program: Bill Nasgovitz, founder, president and portfolio manager of Heartland Advisors, Inc., who was a return speaker for a second year; Andrew C. Stephens, managing director of Artisan Partners Limited Partnership; and Richard T. Weiss, managing director of Wells Capital Management.
Presenting as keynote speaker was Fox Point native, David Einhorn, president and founder of Greenlight Capital. His remarks at our conference were highly anticipated following his 2002 appearance at the Ira Sohn Investment Conference in New York which caused the New York Stock Exchange to suspend trading of private finance industry leader Allied Capital’s shares after he announced that Greenlight had sold short shares in the company. David gained further notice for his later critique of Lehman Brothers’ accounting methods, as well as his decision in August 2007 to short the company months before its sudden collapse. His presentation was well-received and led to many follow-up discussions after the event.
All attendees received a copy of Einhorn’s 2008 book, “Fooling Some of the People All of the Time: A Long Short Story”.
The conference raised $83,000 for Make A Difference - Wisconsin and will go a long way towards enabling us to extend our mission to even more schools in the year ahead. It goes without saying that we could not have realized such tremendous success without the participation and time commitment of our entire panel of speakers, the generous sponsorships of M&I Wealth Management, The Business Journal Serving Greater Milwaukee, Godfrey & Kahn, Cortina Asset Management, PSAV Presentation Services, EnMode Graphic Design, the InterContinental Hotel, the CFA Society of Milwaukee, and Financial Planning Associates of Southeastern Wisconsin, as well as the support of all those who attended.
Next year’s conference is already in the planning stages and details will be announced in the future, we hope to see you all in attendance in 2011!
